The journal Slověne = Словѣне was founded by the decision of the Academic Council of the Institute for Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISS) on December 6, 2011. The first issue of the journal was edited by Fjodor B. Uspenskij (Editor-in-Chief), Roman N. Krivko, and Philip R. Minlos and published at the end of August 2012.
At the end of September 2012, the first version of the website of the journal was posted (http://slovene.ru/), and the journal content has since been placed in the public domain simultaneously with the printed version. In August 2014, the e-version of the journal was launched on the platform of Open Journal Systems (OJS).
From July 2016 until April 2018, Moscow State University of Education was a Publisher of the journal.
