A Sister—A Wife—A Widow: The Phenomenon of Agrafena Chelyadnina and Her Family

Anna F. Litvina, Fjodor B. Uspenskij

Abstract

The article examines the figure of Agrafena Chelaydnina, the governess of Ivan the Terrible. Grand Duke Vasilii the Third gave her specific authority prior to his death. Her life is strongly linked with the history of two families—her parents’ and her husband’s. Both of them played a very significant part at the court and in state policy until the 1770s. The article pays specific attention to Agrafena’s 1531 indow—embroidered veil The Entombment with saints and holidays. Detailed analysis of this artifact of devotement, as well as research on acts and onomastics can solve the question of Chelyadiny. This prosopographic picture allows broadening the perspective on the life of the ruling house and court elite of the time.
