Observations on Family Commemorations in the Donation and kormovye Books of the Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery: Collective Contribution and Name Giving

Ekaterina S. Evdokimova

Abstract

The article examines a special type of monastic commemorations—family feed (korm) commemorations within the walls of the Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery. Korm is a commemoration that includes a special common meal of the monastery brethren in the memory of a person. These commemorations were usually posthumous, although the pages of the contribution books also contain references “grace-feed” (a feed to the health of the person). This monastic practice can be divided into those cases where commemoration is placed on the appointed day for the soul of one deceased, and those where a whole list of people is commemorated together, being quite often, although not always, related to each other. The problem discussed in this paper is the principles of choosing a day (or in some cases days) for such collective family commemorations in the practices of the Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery of the 16th–17th centuries. Its goal is to determine the main trends in the arrangement of such commemorations. It mostly uses materials from the earliest contribution and record books of the Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery from the Collection of the State Historical Museum, the Donation Book of 1585–1587 and the Kormovaya Book of 1581–1582. The synodicons of the Joseph-Vokolamsk Monastery were used as additional material. Representative examples from these sources with quotations are given. The connection between these manuscripts does not raise questions and was examined in other studies. The article considers various types of family kormovye commemorations, highlights the main trends in the selection of days of remembrance, and touches upon the problem of naming in the Russian medieval tradition and Christian binominality.
